A Review of Hyperscanning and Its Use in Virtual Environments

Hyperscanning records several people's brains at once — via EEG, fMRI, or fNIRS — and its use for studying social interaction has grown alongside the rise of collaboration in virtual environments. This review draws together the social-neuroscience work on hyperscanning and the HCI literature on remote collaboration. It then charts a way forward in which monitoring a group's neural activity inside a virtual environment could be used to understand and enhance how well they collaborate.
