Evaluating depth perception of photorealistic mixed reality visualizations for occluded objects in outdoor environments

Perceiving the correct depth of occluded objects is a major challenge for mixed-reality interfaces. This paper evaluates far-field depth perception outdoors using two photorealistic X-ray-type visualisations — X-ray and Melt — with and without a depth cue. Distances to occluded objects were underestimated in every condition — curiously contradicting earlier findings — and the Melt visualisation combined with a depth cue was the most accurate of all.
