Exploring the design space for multi-sensory heart rate feedback in immersive virtual reality

Showing users their own heart rate in VR might enhance the experience, but the best way to present it was unexplored. In a within-subjects study, this paper investigated whether heart-rate feedback improved the VR experience and mapped a design space of multi-sensory representations. Participants enjoyed seeing their heart rate, preferring audio-haptic feedback, while purely visual feedback was reported as distracting — yielding practical guidance for designing physiological feedback in VR.
