Extended Reality for Refugees: Pragmatic Ideas through Ethnographic Research with Refugees in Australia

Technology for vulnerable groups too often starts from assumptions. Taking an ethnographic approach — semi-structured interviews, participatory design, and speculative design with 30 people who arrived in Australia as refugees — this work grounds itself in their lived circumstances. It identifies three key challenges (post-traumatic stress, difficulty seeking information, and cultural adjustment) and discusses how extended-reality applications could be designed to help with each.
