Sharing manipulated heart rate feedback in collaborative virtual environments

Heart rate is read socially as a sign of feeling, so what happens if it is not truthful? In active and passive virtual environments, this study showed collaborators heart-rate feedback that was decreased, unchanged, or increased, and measured social presence, affect, real heart rate, and overall experience. Manipulated feedback significantly changed perceived scariness and nervousness — increased heart-rate feedback made a collaborator seem higher in valence and lower in arousal, and it actually lowered viewers' own real heart rate — while the active environment produced stronger social presence and affect.

By manipulating the heart-rate feedback shown between collaborators in a shared virtual environment, this study probes how perceived physiological state — not just the real signal — shapes social interaction in VR.
